It took a mere 49 sec­onds for mid­dleweight box­er Kevon Di­az to knock out his Guyanese op­po­nent, at the re­turn of the South­ern Games Box­ing Night at Guaracara Park , Point-a-Pierre, on Wednes­day night. The event, host­ed by T&T Am­a­teur Box­ing As­so­ci­a­tion and the T&T Box­ing Board of Con­trol, saw the lo­cal team tak­ing on a strong line- up from Guyana. Bat­tling in the penul­ti­mate match of the night, a con­fi­dent look­ing Di­az squared off against Guyana's Kelvin Nev­er­son in the Ju­nior Medal class. From the sound of the bell, Nev­er­son came in for some heavy blows, try­ing to keep his bal­ance for most of the short fight. Quick on his feet and heavy with the hands, Coop­er de­liv­ered a lethal blow to Nev­er­son's right jaw caus­ing a mild black­out.

This fur­ther awoke a very vo­cal au­di­ence who turned sour af­ter the an­nounc­er's com­ments: "Some peo­ple lend this guy a glass­es, so he can see the doc­tor's fin­ger wav­ing." This caused an up­roar by many of the Guyanese sup­port­ers who la­belled the com­ment as un-sports­man-like and ir­re­spon­si­ble.

In the heavy­weight cat­e­go­ry, lo­cal box­er Den­zil Salazar proved too much for Guyana's An­tho­ny Au­gus­tine, tak­ing com­mand in the three rounds of fights. Af­ter two al­most even­ly con­test­ed rounds, Salazar gained the ad­van­tage in the third, re­leas­ing a flur­ry of heavy blows against Au­gus­tine who seemed to be ex­haust­ed. In the women's light­weight class, it was al­most no com­pe­ti­tion for Wendy Allen who had Jami­la Jones and the ropes and floor through­out out their four-round fight.

Jones spent most of the 12 min­utes in the ring try­ing the min­imise the dam­age be­ing in­flict­ed by a men­ac­ing look­ing Allen, whose pace and arm move­ment proved too much to han­dle. In the am­a­teur seg­ment, the Guyanese team had the up­per hand, with box­er Im­ran Khan win­ning the Trinidad and To­ba­go Am­a­teur Box­ing As­so­ci­a­tion's tro­phy for Fight­er of the Night. Khan com­pet­ed against the lo­cal box­er Shakir Gar­cia in the 56 KG cat­e­go­ry and com­plete­ly dom­i­nat­ed his op­po­nent. In the 60kg fight Guyana's Stephan Govia over­came T&T's Ak­il Thomas while his team mate Ian Ban­croft claimed vic­to­ry over Lav­el Nurse in the 75kg match. Lead­ing the re­sis­tance for team T&T was Lawrence Singh in the 52kg cat­e­go­ry who out­matched his op­po­nent Richard Williamson.
