"Most Runs" awardee Sheldon Balroop inspired the South team to a nine-run victory over North when the El Dorado Youth Group held its first annual T20 North vs South Cricket Classic on April 8. The T20 event bowled off at 12 pm at the El Dorado Community Centre grounds. The South team was the first to step up to the crease and was greatly assisted by Balroop who led the charge with a match high of 20 runs. But some fine bowling from the opposing side saw South accumulate a total of 63 runs in 11 overs. A Ali was North's top bowler, and took an impressive four wickets for three runs in just three overs.
With a target of 64 runs, the North side then stepped with the bat to take a crack at victory. However, the Northerners were dismissed for 54 runs in 14 overs despite the efforts of Ali and R Ramlal who both chipped in with ten runs each. South bowler T Hinds, did the most damage with the ball taking two wickets for five runs in three overs, while some brilliant field work from Jeremy Norman, saw him earn the "Best Out-field performance" award.
According to President of the Youth Group, Alvin Balchan, the event was hosted in order to showcase the talent of the youths in the El Dorado community. "This competition was held to highlight the youths in the community, and to show the community that we can have an impact on the community through sports..." Balchan explained. The President went onto to commend both sides for their performances and dubbed the inaugural event as a success, "It was definitely a success. This was really to bring the community members closer together and I think we all had a good time."
