Amanda George kept Ventures in the hunt for a T&T Hockey Board Women's Championship "Big-Four" spot when she netted a late goal to earn a 2-2 draw with Shandy Carib Magnolias at the National Hockey Centre, Tacarigua, on Sunday night. Going into the encounter, Magnolias with seven points and from five matches and Ventures, a point behind from the same number of matches both needed a win. Teenager, Brianna Govia handed Magnolias the perfect start when she scored from field goal play in the eight minute. With spectators still trickling into the venue for the eagerly anticipated clash, Yesenia Luces got Ventures back on even terms in the 13th minute only for Govia to restore her team's one-goal advantage within seconds of the re-start as both teams went on an all-attack from the first whistle.
Despite the open play from both teams there were no more goals before the interval while in the second-half a number of chances went abegging before George scored from a penalty-corner with three minutes left to earn Ventures what could be a valuable point. With the draw result, Magnolias stayed fifth on the table with eight points from six matches and one left against Paradise to complete its first round schedule while Ventures is a point behind ahead of its clash with Notre Dame to end its first round schedule. At the top of the table and certain to compete in the "Big-Four" is Paragon with 15 points from six matches while reigning "Big-Four" champion Notre Dame is second with 12 from five matches.
Reigning league title-holders Malvern is third with ten points from six matches while Harvard Maritime Checkers is currently in the last qualifying spot with nine points from five matches. In the Men's Championship Division, Shaquille Daniel scored two second-half goals for Notre Dame in a 2-1 win over Corona Fatima. Daniel, found the target in the 49th and 53rd minute before Quinn Clarke got a 60th minute item for Fatima to reduce the deficit to 2-1. However, the Dames managed to hold onto the slim lead to improve to ten points from its seven matches and fifth spot at the end of the first round. The four qualifiers for the men's Big-Four series have already been determined in defending league champion, Petrotrin (18 points), Paragon (15 points), last year's winners Defence Force (15 points) and Queen's Park (12 points).
