Suriname's Inter Moengotapoe secured a place in the second round of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship after it edged nine-man Hubentut Fortuna of Curacao, 3-2 in its final Group Two First Round qualifier at Providence Stadium, Guyana on Saturday night. Inter, winners of their first two matches, only needed a draw to top the group but a minute before the interval, Patrick Jimmy opened the scoring only for Jose Chacas to get Fortuna back even, on the stroke of half-time. Fortuna, which needed a victory to keep its hopes alive, went ahead through Dwight Belliot on the hour mark.
However, Belliot was then shown a second yellow card for his overzealous celebrations which left his team down to ten men. Within five minutes, Inter made use of its player advantage as Ives Vlijter got the equaliser before Stefano Rijssel fired in the go-ahead item five minutes later for a 3-2 lead. With the win, Inter ended with a maximum nine points while Fortuna remained on three points. Alpha United (six points) which got a double from Anthony Abrams, in the seventh and 80th minute to blank Milerock 2-0 in an all-Guyana clash, made full use of Fortuna's slip up and secured the final second round spot as the best runner up from the three groups.
Over at the Stade Sylvio Cator, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Bony Pierre scored a last minute equaliser as Victory snatched a 1-1 draw with fellow Haitian club Baltimore to top the group on goal difference after both teams ended with four points.
Four minutes earlier Tonio Pierre had given Baltimore the lead and what looked like a late winner. Inter and Victory now join Group One winner, Cayman Islands' club, Georgetown and Alpha United (the best runner up from the three groups) in the second-round eight-team group stage from May 1-6.
Georgetown and Alpha United will compete with seeded sides, Puerto Rico Islanders-the two-time defending champion-and T&T's Caledonia AIA in one group while Inter and Victory join T&T's W Connection-a four-time champion (2001, 2002, 2006, 2009) and two-time runner up (2000 & 2003)-and Barracudas FC of Antigua, in the other group from May 1 to 5. The winners and runners up from the two groups will advance to the CFU club championship finals May 23-27, with three teams qualifying for next season's Concacaf Champions League.
