T&T's cyclists did not win any medals on the fourth and penultimate day of the Pan American Junior Championships in Guatemala yesterday. Samuel Mahabir finished sixth in heat three of the keirin, with the top two automatically advancing to the semifinal round. It meant that the Arima Wheelers cyclist had to go through the repecharge in order to move forward. Mahabir faced Ibanez (URU), Pastrian (CHI) and Vasquez (CRC) in heat two of the keirin repecharge round where only the winner would advance to the semifinal. A strong ride by the T&T rider saw him coming in second, unfortunately one spot too far down to advance. Meanwhile, Akil Campbell currently sits in tenth place after three events with 30 points in the Omnium after he clocked a personal best in the Flying Lap (250m) with a 14.808 seconds. That time earned him a credible ten points for a tenth place finish. In the second of six Omnium events, Campbell finished sixth in the final sprint but a lap down to the leaders, earning him an 11th place finish overall and a further 11 points to his tally. Thus the youngster stood on 21 points after two events and in 11th position overall.
The final Omnium event of the day was the elimination or as the local jargon would call it "Devil take the Hindmost." Campbell put in an improved performance as he survived the first four eliminations only to be nipped for a ninth place finish and nine more points, taking his total to 30. With three more events remaining (3km Individual Pursuit, Scratch Race and 1km Time Trial) today, the Rigtech Sonics cyclist stands in 11th place, three points behind his closest competitor, Renato Tapia (PER) on 27. In a bit of bad news, Kwesi Browne crashed yesterday as well and was subsequently taken to the hospital. Campbell will face the starter in the second heat of the individual pursuit versus Tapia at 12 pm T&T time. With Justin Roberts still unable to recover from the injuries he sustained in his fall during the quarterfinal stage of the Sprints, Mahabir has been chosen to ride the Kilometre Time Trial today. The grueling event kicks off first at 11 am (T&T Time) and Mahabir will line up as the second of 24 entrants to test the clock on the final day of the Championships. Additionally, due to the change in the programme, the ladies keirin event will be contested today and it is expected that Aziza Browne and Jodi Goodridge will compete. The two are looking to make-up for their performance in the sprints.
