Forty-eight hours after scoring the double which gave W Connection its opening win of the competition, Hashim Arcia bagged another brace in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship, on Tuesday night, sealing a semi-final place for the "Savonetta Boys". W Connection thrashed a sorry Inter Moengoetapoe of Suriname 6-0, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva. National attacker Shahdon Winchester improved tremendously from the first match to score two goals (3rd, 52nd), with the other efforts coming from defender Kern Cupid (42nd) and winger Rennie Britto (65th). The match followed a goalless stalemate between Antigua Barracuda and Victory, which Connection stung 2-0, on Sunday night. The results means that Stuart Charles Fevrier-coached W Connection leads the four team Group Five standings with six points, followed by Barracuda trailing on four points and both Victory and Inter Moengoetapoe on one and zero points, respectively. W Connection looked a much improved team in the second match, albeit against a probably much weaker opponent in the Surinamese outfit.
The scoring began in the third minute, when Winchester slotted home from a cross by former Ma Pau player Britto, who also had an assist in the last CFU outing. Connection may have had another two goals before the second which came in the 31st minute from a confident Arcia, from close range. Britto again had the assist, as he continued to impress. Just three minutes before the break W Connection found a third, putting Moengoetapoe in shambles, when another close range finish, this time from fullback Cupid, who received a clever pass from Winchester, who had been lively, but somewhat wasteful in the Group Five opener. Connection again could have added to the already humiliating tally before the break, had Winchester and defender turned midfielder Joevin Jones, been more clinical with their numerous opportunities. W Connection was similarly dominant in the second period and got its fourth and Winchester's second within seven minutes of the restart.
The fifth of the match was also Arcia's second, as the forward continued to maintain his momentum. The goal, again, was the fourth in two matches. The sixth and final goal came from the right winger in the 65th minute. Following a needless foul outside the penalty box, Britto clinically swung in a terrific right footed effort that breezed past Brayen Damba, Inter's custodian, who in fact saved his team from an even more embarrassing scoreline following the goal. Inter's day went from bad, to worse when one of its players Claudio Pinas was shown a red card and dismissed for dissent in the 82nd minute. W Connection, four time winners of the competition, was led to celebrate a berth in the semi-final. It has one match remaining in the group, and will be up against potentially its toughest opponent in Antigua Barracuda, from 7.30 pm, at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, tonight.
