Spinners Akeal Hosein and Amit Jaggernauth had match figures of eight for 27 (4-16 & 4-11) and seven for 64 (2-31 & 5-33) respectively, as Queen's Park Cricket Club edged closer to their second consecutive title with a crushing innings and 121-run victory over the last placed SIS Central Sports in the penultimate round of the T&TCB Premier Division at the Queen's Park Oval in St Clair yesterday. Having already secured a 225-run first innings advantage on Saturday, the Parkites dismissed their opponents for 104 in the second innings as the virtually unplayable Hosein (4-11) and Jaggernauth (5-33) got the better of the Central Sports batsmen for the second day in a row. With the win, Queen's Park moved to 164 points for a 22-point lead over Powergen (142), who rose from fourth to second when they whipped Esmeralda by an innings and ten-runs at Syne Village.
Legspinner Samuel Badree was the hero for Powergen, finishing the match nine for 92 (7-52 & 2-40). Resuming yesterday on 252 for nine, in reply to Esmeralda's 120, Powergen reached 258 all out for a lead of 138. Badree (2-40) and Vaaroon Samaroo (4-42) then finished off the struggling Esmeralda, who collapsed to 128 in their second innings. Queen's Park captain Justin Guillen said his players were in good spirits going into next weekend's final match against Esmeralda. "We've been playing pretty good cricket all season so it's a good feeling going into the last game with such a comfortable lead... I think our younger players have really matured a lot and put in performances when we needed them to. Meanwhile, the senior guys are always chipping in and our coach David [Furlonge] has got the team to play as a unit."
In Tacarigua, Ceramic Merryboys fell from second to fourth when they narrowly conceded first innings points to Moosai Sports, who remained in third. After Saturday's play was completely washed out, Moosai batted first yesterday and were reduced to 158 by spinners Emile Rajah (4-45), Javed Ramdhanie (2-43) and Alcindo Holder (2-58) and quick bowler Atiba Allert (2-8).
However, Merryboys fell eight runs short of the total as spinners Ken Hazel (4-34) and Jervon Searles (3-44) and medium pacer Navin Stewart (2-22) took 39.1 overs to run through the team. Moosai gained 12 points for the results while Merryboys earned six.
