With no turf rac­ing yes­ter­day at San­ta Rosa Park, Ari­ma, the fea­ture event for hors­es rat­ed 90-70 over 1,200 me­tres, was con­test­ed on the main course. This proved to be no prob­lem for the Harold Chadee-trained speed­ster, Smart Amer­i­can, which won in im­pres­sive fash­ion by 2 1/4 lengths. The four year-old chest­nut colt had won three times this sea­son and re­turned to the win­ner's en­clo­sure at odds of 2/1 un­der Bar­ba­di­an ap­pren­tice An­to­nio White­hall. King Whistler, which beat him on two oc­ca­sion, was be­hind in sec­ond po­si­tion, while Wild Shuf­fle ran on for third with Joezel and Fly Ju­nior dead-heat­ing for fourth. Smart Amer­i­can reg­is­tered the time of 1:05.3 for the trip.

The Glenn Mendez-trained, Raise Your Glass de­stroyed his clas­sic as­pi­ra­tion when he fin­ished fifth in the fifth event over 1,750 me­tres. The Deo Ma­haraj-owned chest­nut should have won in a can­ter but was dis­ap­point­ing be­hind La­dy Sage, which was win­ning for the sec­ond time. Rid­ing ho­n­ours for the day were shared be­tween Nicholas Patrick and cham­pi­on Bri­an Boodram­s­ing as both men rode dou­bles.
