Reyare Thomas and Janiel Bellille were crowned double champions at the National Junior Colleges Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Levelland Texas, USA which took place from May 15-17. Thomas of Iowa Central Community College sped to gold in the women's 100 and 200m. In the shorter sprint Thomas crossed the line in 11.30, a personal best and was one hundredth of a second off the Olympic A standard of 11.29. The 2009 World Championships sprint relay finalist improved on her second place finish in the last year's finals and added the outdoor crown to the 60m indoor title she captured earlier this year. Thomas advanced the finals clocking the second fastest in the heats (11.50). The 21-year-old then took the 200m in 23.67, moving up from her bronze medal run in 2011. In the heats Thomas was second best with 24.04. Thomas ended the championships with four medals, as she helped her school to silver medals in women's 4X100 (45.85) and 4X400 (3:44.88).
Bellille blazed to victory in the women's 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles events. The South Plains student took the sprint hurdles in a personal best of 13.47 seconds. In the heats Bellille clocked 13.99, the second fastest. The 2008 World Junior silver medallist then landed the 400m hurdles crowning 56.00, a new Championships record, erasing the 57.88 clocking by the 2008 Olympic champion Melanie Walker of Jamaica. Bellille's time is quicker than the Olympic B Standard of 56.65 and just off her season's best of 55.91. Her school mate Sparkle McKnight was third in 59.03 behind another South Plain student Shana-Gaye Tracey of Jamaica (58.62). In the prelims Bellille was the quickest (58.73) with Mc Knight third fastest (1:00.86). Mc Knight earned a second medal taking second in the women's 400m flat in 53.56. (54.87 in the heats). The 2010 double Carifta silver was the favourite for gold after coming into the championships with the fastest time of 53.29 but was beaten to the line by team-mate Jamaican Amoy Blake (53.49). Mc Knight improved on her third place finish in 2011. Bellille and McKnight paced South Plains to the women's 4X400m titles in 3:37.45. Bellille was on course for another gold the 4X100m finals but South Plains failed to finish in the finals.
