Sprinters held the spotlight at this year’s Quantum Classics as American Calesio Newman scorched the Hasely Crawford stadium track on Saturday, taking both the 100m (10.07) and 200m (20.31) titles. Ruddy Zang Milama of Gabon also clocked a world class time of 11.03 in taking the women’s 100m while top billing Natasha Hastings of the USA dominated the women’s 400m (51.71). Keshorn Walcott and Ayana Alexander continued their record breaking form this season winning the men’s javelin with a 78.94m and women’s triple jump (14.15) respectively. Both set national open records.
Newman blazed to victory in the men’s 200m ahead of Tremaine Harris of Canada (20.63) and local sprinter Moriba Morain (Simplex) who clocked a personal best of 20.77. The effort also earned Newman a new personal best (pb) time and also got him under the Olympic A standard of 20.55 while Morain cut 0.03 seconds on his previous best.

Another T&T sprinter, 18-year old Jareem Richards finished fourth with a pb of 20.82. The American then returned to capture the 100m in 10.07, again getting his best time ever over the trip. He finished ahead of compatriot Ivory Williams (10.20) and Canada’s Justin Warner (10.29). Zang Milama soared to victory in the women’s 100m clocking a Gabonese record of 11.03, lowering the previous best of 11.09 which she held since 2009. The 2010 World Indoor 60m bronze medalist raced to the line well clear of the field pulling Chastity Riggien of the USA (11.23), T&T’s sprint lass Michelle Lee-Ahye (11.24) and Phyllis George of Canada (11.25) under the Olympic A standard of 11.29. Lee-Ahye has now gotten the Olympic Mark for the second time in 2012 after clocking a pb of 11.19 in April. Hastings, a multiple World and Olympic relay gold medalist, was unstoppable in the women’s 400m dominating the race. The daughter of former national sprint John Gardiner took the lead after the first 100m and clocked a 51.71 seconds. Bahamian Lenece Clarke was a distant second (54.46) with another American Demetria Davis in third (54.51). The women’s 200m was also a fast encounter with USA’s Porsha Lucas winning in 22.65 seconds with compatriot and this year’s Southern Games double sprint champion Shayla Mason runner-up in 22.99. The pair was ahead of Canada’s Crystal Emanuel 23.12.

Walcott was not to be outdone in the field events as the 19-year-old added another record to his collection getting the men’s open mark with a distance of 78.94. This erased the old record of 78.06 which Kirk Thompson set in 1996. Walcott also bettered his national junior distance of 77.59 which he achieved in taking his third straight Boys Under-20 Carifta javelin title in Bermuda in April. Another Carifta champion Mark London took the men’s 800m in a pb of 1:51.99, improving on his 1:52.08 attained last month. Reigning Commonwealth silver medallist Ayana Alexander got a national record of the second straight weekend. Alexander got out to 14.15m improving the 14.14 which she set at the Virginia Challenge in the USA on May 12. Mikel Thomas was denied a national record in the men’s 100m hurdles after he finished second in a wind assisted time of 13.31 seconds. Thomas who has qualified for the Olympic with his 13.48 clocking earlier this year, was denied the national mark as the wind reading was 2.6m/s, over the legal limit of 2.0. The University of Kentucky graduate finished behind American Ronnie Ash who won in 13.26.
