Coach of the Queen’s Park Cricket Club David Furlonge has singled out teamwork as one of the main factors in his team’s success so far this season as they copped their second title of the season Sunday walking away with the Premier League title. With the 2012 Sunday League 50-Overs silverware already in the trophy cabinet, the Parkites, who won an unprecedented triple crown last season, need only to successfully defend their T20 Festival title next week to repeat their dominance over their rivals. Furlonge said Queen’s Park WAs dedicating the 2012 season to their former Nevis-born batsman Runako Morton who tragically died in a single vehicle accident earlier this year and he was quite satisfied in the achievements of the club so far.

He said the club had to come to terms with the loss of Morton and the unavailability of several top players who were on national and international duty which created the opportunity for the reserve players to make a solid contribution. “Another thing is that we played more as a team this year. It was a team effort. Notably we have not had a batsman making a hundred runs, yet we are on top of the league table,” said Furlonge. After winning the Premiership for the second successive year on Sunday, the Parkites have now set their eyes on the T20 Festival which starts next week at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre which they also intend to retain for another clean sweep of the Premiership titles at stake.

“We are confident of doing well in the tournament  and we are practising for it  and have started training already. There are also a few practice matches planned for us at night here at the Oval next week,” said Furlonge. The coach had special praise for the club’s solid performance to Tobagonian Lincoln Roberts who he said stepped into the breach left by Morton. Roberts hit a match-winning century at the top of the order to secure the Sunday League Trophy in the final against T&TEC Sports under lights at Guaracara Park, earlier this season. “Other good contributions came from captain Justin Guillen, Akeal Hosein, youngster Clarry Pierre and Anthony Balgobin who I think is one of the better keepers in the country right now and his batting has certainly improved this year,” said Furlonge.
