Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said her two-year-old People's Partnership (PP) remained committed to developing the sportsmen and women of T&T. She said as a consequence several facilities were at various stages of completion to assist sportsmen and women. Speaking at the PP's second anniversary rally in Mid Centre Mall, Chaguanas on Thursday, Persad-Bissessar said rehabilitation work had commenced on 94 recreation grounds across Trinidad. She said when completed some 250,000 people will benefit.
She said: "Construction of the National Acquatic Centre, which was first promised by late prime minister Dr Eric Williams 46 years ago, has already commenced under Sports Minister Anil Roberts." Also sharing that work on the National Cycling Veledrome, next to the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva had also started." Persad-Bissessar said, "More than 1,500 community groups, non-government organisations, religious bodies, teams and clubs have received funding and assistance to tune of $60 million boost work in their communities." The PM also stated that T&T will be represented at this year's Olympics in London in track and field, swimming and cycling. She went on to boast that T&T will also participate in the sport of boxing at the Olympics for the first time since 1996 and also take part in the sport of sailing for the first time since the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
