Olympic qualifiers Deon Lendore, Zwede Hewitt, Semoy Hackett, Kai Selvon and Annie Alexander have advanced to the 2012 NCAA Division One outdoor track and field championships in Des Moines, Iowa, USA from June 6 to 9. At the NCAA Regional preliminaries Lendore and Hewitt booked places in the men’s 400m on the second day of the West Prelims in Austin Texas on Friday. Lendore of Texas was fourth quickest in the one-lap quarterfinals clocking 45.28 in finishing second spot in heat three. Lendore’s time was his second fastest behind his best of 45.13 set in winning the Big 12 title earlier this month. Hewitt was fifth behind Lendore in 46.28, the 12th fastest of the day. Both quarter-milers were in action yesterday with their schools in the men’s 4x400m prelims. National 110m hurdles record holder Wayne Davis moved into the quarterfinals of the men’s sprint hurdles in a wind assisted time of 13.56 in topping heat five. Durel Busby followed Davis home in second in 13.71, the seventh fastest. Both contested the semifinals late yesterday. Garvyn Nero (Baylor) went out in the men’s 800m quarterfinals taking 17th in 1:50.73, missing out a top 12 spot needed to advance. Nyoka Giles (Minnesota) was 39th in the women’s 200m heats clocking 24.47. Only the top 27 advanced to the quarterfinals. Giles was in action yesterday with Minnesota’s women’s 4x100m team. In the women’s 4x400 qualifiers Giles and Aleena Brooks were scheduled to compete for Minnesota. Iowa’s Carisa Leacock was among the starters in the women’s triple jump qualifiers.
At the NCAA East Preliminaries in Jacksonville Florida, Hackett and Selvon are into the NCAA Champs women’s 100m. Hackett (LSU) was third overall in the quarterfinals in 11.31 while Selvon was tenth in 11.44. Both also advanced to the 200m quarterfinals. Hackett was fourth in the heats in an Olympic A qualifying time of 23.05. Selvon was sixth in 23.12, the top 27 advanced. Alexander is in the women’s discus after finishing third in the qualifiers. The Tennessee student tossed the implement for a distance of 54.35. Ashlee Smith (McNeese State) also qualified taking seventh spot (51.72). However, Hilenn James (Georgia) was 40th (40.97). Kyron Blaise (LSU) had the fourth best jump (15.82) in the men’s triple jump qualifiers while his LSU school-mate Ade Alleyne-Forte booked a spot in the men’s 400m after placing tenth in the quarterfinals in 46.22. In the men’s 200m heats another LSU student Shermund Allsop was 16th quickest clocking 20.85, finishing among the top 27 and advanced to the quarterfinals. Jamol James (Tennessee) was 35th (21.34). In the 100m quarters Allsop missed out on a top 12 spot finished 16th in 10.39. Emanuel Mayers (Mississippi State) bowed out of the men’s 400m at the semifinals round returning the 14th fastest time of 51.09. Only the top 12 advanced. Emmanuel Stewart was 29th in the men’s javelin qualifiers with a distance of 60.28, missing out on qualifying as only the top 27 advanced. Late yesterday Allsop contested the men’s 200m quarterfinals and 4x100m prelims while James was also in action in the men’s 4x100m. Hackett and Selvon lined up the women’s 200m quarterfinals and 4x100 prelims. T’Keyah Dumoy also competed in the women’s 4x100 with her Florida International team-mates. Alleyne Forte and Mayers also lined up with their schools in the men’s 4x400m prelims.
