Rain puts PowerGen into Festival semis

PowerGen earned the right to contest today’s semifinal of the TTCB T20 Festival against Queen’s Park after their quarterfinal game against Esmeralda was washed out yesterday, at a rainy Guaracara Park. Morning showers yesterday put paid to any chance of the early match being played. This followed a complete washout on Wednesday when Queen’s Park earned the right to contest the semis without a ball being bowled in their game against T&TEC. Up to press time, the team to meet Preysal, who also moved into the semifinals without playing on Wednesday, was still in the air as Merryboys were due to play First Citizens Clarke Road in the last quarterfinal. Preysal Sports will have a chance to salvage something from their season after being demoted from the National Cricket League.

They were fortunate to advance at the expense of Moosai Sports, since they  had more wins in the preliminary round than their opponents. They defeated Esmeralda and Bamboo in their group. Moosai Sports won one game and lost one game at the group stage. Queen’s Park also advanced with two wins. They defeated Moosai Sports by 89 runs and had a thrilling three-wicket victory over SIS Central Sports. Wednesday’s  heavy rain left the ground unplayable and it was made even worse by the fact that there was a Sports Day held on the outfield. Petrotrin double booked the venue and when they realised their mistake, they tried to arrange for the Sports Day to be taken to the second ground. However officials who were in charge of the event objected to the transfer. The constant running on the wet outfield clearly damaged the area and made it impossible for cricket to be played. Following today’s semifinal matches, the final and third place play-off will be stage tomorrow from 3 pm for the first prize of $180,000.
