Guyana’s Cleveland Forde successfully defended his Eastern Credit Union (ECU) Granny Luces Classic 15K Men’s Open title after clocking 49 minutes 20 seconds at the La Joya Complex, St Joseph, on Sunday. Forde was a narrow seven second ahead of T&T’s Richard Jones and Curtis Cox (51:42), who took second and third, respectively, in the 24th annual staging of the Road Race event. The race hosted over 300 runners in the Men’s Open (5K and 15K), Women’s Open (5K and 15K), Physically Challenged (15K), Masters Men’s and Women’s (50 and Over 15K) and Boys and Girls (12 and Under 5K).

The 15K began at the Arima Velodrome, while the 5K started at St Mary’s Children’s Home, Tacarigua.  Tonya Nero took the Women’s Open title in a impressive time of 57:32, considerably faster than her nearest challenger Euleen Josiah-Tanner who finished second in 1:01:04. Celine Lestrade took third in 1:05:11. Kester Joseph sealed the Physically Challenged 15K race in 1:11:10, while Peter Ragoonanan (1:00:24) and Rosamund Jolly (1:24:25) took the Master’s 50 and Over Men’s and Women’s titles, respectively. The ECU has announced that it intends to make the 2013 edition of the race, a much larger event to commemorate the 25th staging of the annual event. As part of the co-operative’s Diabetes Awareness initiative, they will also be hosting a  Walk Against Diabetes on November  10. It will be the third staging of the walk and all proceeds will be donated to the Diabetes Association of T&T.
