National players, Wayne Legerton and Solomon Eccles scored a pair of goals apiece as Petrotrin ended its poor run with a 6-1 come-from-behind thrashing of Corona Fatima in the T&T Hockey Board Men's Championship Division at the National Hockey Centre, Tacarigua, on Sunday night. Fatima looked set to extend the Oilmen's recent poor form when it took a 23rd minute lead through Dominic Jaikaransingh, but within a minute Legerton got his first to put the Oilmen level at 1-1. Eccles put Petrotrin ahead for the first time in the 49th minute after which fellow T&T internationals Atiba Whittington (56th) and Nicholas Grant (58th) as well as Eccles, with his second in the 61st minite netted to put the match out of Fatima's reach at 5-1. Legerton got his second five minutes from full-time. With the win, defending champion, Petrotrin which ended bottom of the table in the recently concluded "Big-Four" series pushed its points tally to 24 from nine matches at the top of the eight-team standings, three more than Big-Four winners' Paragon. Third is Defence Force with 18 while Queen's Park is next with 15, both with a match in hand.
..Dames close in on Malvern
In the Women's Championship Division speedy national forward Arielle Du Quesnay got a crucial 53rd item to seal a 2-1 win for Notre Dame over Harvard Maritime Checkers. After a goalless first-half Barbados international Patrina Brathwaite put the Dames ahead in the 39th only for national forward Britney Hingh to reply for Checkers in the 52nd minute. However, their joy lasted all of a minute as Du Quesnay fired in a field goal right from the re-start after which her team held firm to secure the valuable win and move up to second on the standings with 18 points from seven matches, one adrift of Paragon which has played two more matches.
Defending champion, Malvern is third with 16 points from eight matches while Checkers remained fourth, a further point back.
