Former national player Raphael Govia fired in a beaver-trick to lead Queen's Park in a 7-1 drubbing of Corona Fatima and within a win of repeating as T&T Hockey Board Mixed Veterans Division champions. Govia opened the scoring at the National Hockey Centre, Tacarigua on Wednesday night after only two minutes while Gary Griffith made it 2-0 in the tenth minute. Three minutes before the interval, Derek Lee pulled a goal back for Fatima, however in the second-half, the Parkites went on the rampage with five un-answered goals.
Azad Ali made it 3-1 in the 40th while Govia (47th, 55th, 65th) and Griffith with his second in the 51st minute all found the target to complete a comprehensive 7-1 blowout which carried their points tally to 30 from 11 matches, six more than Notre Dame which has only one match left to complete its 14-match campaign.
The Parkites now need only a win from their last three matches to secure the crown as only fourth third place Defence Force with 19 points from ten matches could surpass its current point tally should it win all its remaining matches and the table leader lose its remaining fixtures. On Tuesday, Scott Dopson scored a hat-trick (2nd, 26th, 54th) and Selwyn King, the other in the fourth minute for the Dames ina 4-0 shut-out of Police. Today, the Championship Division will take centre stage with two matches from 6.30 pm. In the opener, Defence Force and Shandy Carib Magnolias women face off while Defence Force and Notre Dame men meet from 8 pm.
