Former national player Lennox Francis will lead T&T’s six-member team at the Davis Cup Americas tennis tournament Group III Competition, as non-playing captain when the event serves off in Tobago today.  Team T&T comprising Francis, Yohansey Williams, Liam Gomez, Vaughn Wilson, Luke de Caires, and alternate Seve Day, will come-up against talents from nine other countries all of which are already booked in on the island. Competition will be played at the Shaw Park Tennis Facility in Tobago. This is the first time Tobago will be hosting a qualifying round of the Davis Cup and from June 18 to 23, tennis fans travelling to Tobago will see the best of T&T in action against Aruba, Bahamas, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama and US Virgin Islands.

Blink | bmobile is the official sponsor of the T&T Davis Cup team, as well as one of the four major sponsors for the event. “Tobago is deserving of the nod to host such a prestigious world-class sporting event,” said TSTT’s Onica Blackman, Manager, Marketing, Enterprise and Communications. She continued: “Given the importance of this event to the island’s multi-faceted tourism and sporting interests, blink | bmobile was pleased to be brought on as one of a few selected sponsors to help ensure the tournament lives up to the high standards expected.”  Dunstan De Noon, coach of the national under-18 tennis team and Coordinator for the Group III competition, is confident about T&T’s chances. He said the team recently competed creditably against Barbados and that was a good warm up for the competition. For the Tobago leg of the competition, the ten countries will be divided into two groups for round-robin matches. The top nation in each pool will then play off against the runner-up in another pool. Only the top two countries will qualify for promotion to the Americas Zone Group II for 2013.
