Carifta champion Chelsea James was a double winner on the opening day of the annual Morvant Jets Games at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday. James took the Girls' Under-17 Shot Put and Discus titles, landing the shot put with a 14.29m. The Tobago Falcons athlete improved her personal best of 14.02m, which she set in taking the Carifta title in Bermuda in April. The CAC Junior team member finished ahead of Carifta bronze medallist Portious Warren of Toco TAFAC (11.87m) and clubmate Britney Bedlow (9.92m). James first sent the iron ball out to 14.15m and then to 14.29m before securing the Discus. Meanwhile, juvenile double champions Adel Colthrust of Southern Athletics and Petrotrin Palo Seco's Atiba Samuel took the Boys' Under-13 200m (24.30) and Under-15 800m (2:10.13) respectively.
Junior Under-18 100m gold medallist Aaliyah Telesford (Point Fortin New Jets) took home the Women's 200m (24.72). Precious George (Warriors) was victorious in the Boys' Under-17 Javelin (50.80m) while QRC's Carisa Leacock topped the field in the Women's Long Jump (5.86m). Shelly Jones (Petrotrin PAP) ran away with the Girls' Under-17 800m (2:40.72). World Masters indoor double gold medallist Gwendolyn Smith (Petrotrin Palo Seco) got the better of her younger competitors in the Women's Shot Put (12.38m) while Toco TAFAC's Cherisse Murray (11.87m) and Burnley's Sharisse Downey (11.71) took the minor places. Downey was crowned champion in the Women's Discus ahead of Murray. Another Burnley athlete, Dominique Williams, blazed to gold in the Women's 800m. Also among the winners were Point Fortin New Jets' Kevin Roberts (Men's High Jump – 1.95m), Petrotrin Palo Seco's Kendis Bullard (Men's 800m – 1:53.43), TTDF's Kevin Haynes (Men's 200m – 21.36), Guyanese Ornesto Thomas (Boys' Under-17 800m) and Elton Bollers (Boys' Under-20 200m – 21.51). The action will continue from 9 am this morning. The events on schedule include the 100m, 400m and 1500m races.
