Scouting for local talent has long been associated with cultural icon Holly Betaudier. The veteran now has an ally in South Central Island Production. The organisation will host its fifth annual talent show on June 23, at the San Fernando Creative Arts Centre, starting at 8 pm. Comprising the South Central Culture Foundation and Island Café, the organistion says the event seeks to give the opportunity to people of all ages to showcase their talent.
The national competition has attracted contestants from various parts of the country. Carey Stephens, chairman of the organisation, says the show will feature various acts such as calypso, rapso, instrumentals and monologues. Of the 24 semifinalists, only 12 will advance into the finals.
Entering the competition for the third time, Curtis Braithwaite, 34, who performs under the sobriquet Kemis, is a local rhythm and blues singer hoping to book a place in the finals. Kemis says he is influenced by artistes such as the late Michael Jackson. The aspiring Claxton Bay artiste has entered many competitions in the hope of a successful career in the music industry. Point Fortin resident Lystra Nurse is one of the 28 semifinalists. The 48-year-old singer performs all genres of music and sings calypso seasonally under her stage name Lady Lystra. Nurse has been entering competitions since her primary-school days at Marabella Girls' Anglican and has been composing music for more than 15 years. She says her inspiration comes from Singing Sandra and the late Whitney Houston. Both competitors are keeping their songs of choice for the show close to their chest. They are both aiming for victory and stardom. "Recognising your talent, positive thinking and a high level of self esteem is needed to move forward in this competition," Nurse said, adding that each round of the competition requires a higher level of commitment.
