Coplow, a solid Doncaster choice

The Jeffrey Ross Racing Special

Coplow has a ‘special’ look in the Maiden Stakes over ten furlongs of ‘good’ Doncaster ground today. Enough boxes are ticked for this Richard Hannon-trained, Manduro filly to be napped! We’re enjoying a much better spell. ‘Seconditis’ appears to have been cured and with Hannon’s yard now beginning to fire on all cylinders, not to mention several other high-profile stables, there’s every reason to believe July will be a good month for followers of this column. That’s usually the case, as regular readers would testify. Perfect Delight looked the proverbial ‘cert’, at Newbury a fortnight ago and duly landed our nap, by a hard-fought length, from Coplow!

The rest were two and half lengths and upwards in arrears and I’m able to recall feeling slightly uneasy in the closing stages, happy to see the finishing line. That indicates Coplow is improving and indeed, the time-handicap mark under Kieren O’Neill, confirmed this fact. We’ll doubtless get a good price, related to her chance because Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore team up with once-raced, Shada and in-form Clive Cox saddles Miracle Maid, a stable-companion of Perfect Delight! Market movements should be interesting and indeed, informative but O’Neill is really warming to his job with the champion trainer and should be able to time his challenge to perfection on Coplow.

Moore also rides recent beaten-favourite Uprise for his guv’nor in the nine-runner Maiden Stakes over six furlongs; what beats this extremely consistent, hitherto luckless Pivotal gelding will win, of that I’m totally convinced because his form bears close inspection. Folkestone runs a seven-race programme in tandem, opening with the Maiden Stakes over six furlongs which affords lightly-raced four-year-old Al Janadeirya an excellent opportunity. Peter Chapple-Hyam’s charge comes out ‘best-in’ from a clutch of progressive three-year-olds; it wont be easy but it’s significant Richard Hughes is booked. If all eight go to post Al Janadeirya represents an outstanding each-way bet but make sure they all run before...!
