National women’s team forward Krizia Layne registered a beaver-trick to lead defending champion Malvern to an 8-2 thrashing of Ventures in the T&T Hockey Board Women’s Championship Division at the National Hockey Centre, Tacarigua on Friday night. Layne opened the scoring for Malvern in the 14th minute, but Ventures which was without first choice goalkeeper Sarayah-U Plaza was soon back on even terms with an 18th minute equaliser from Cian Lue Sue. Thir joy was short-lived, however, as former national player Penelope Stephens restored Malvern’s lead a minute later while Layne (24th & 32nd) and Stephens (26th) added three quick items for a 5-1 lead.
But just before the half-time whistle, Lue Sue got her second of the match for her team to trail 4-2 at the interval and keep its slim hopes of salvaging something out of the match alive. Eleven minutes into the second half, Stephens dashed any hopes of a Ventures comeback when she completed her hat-trick while Carina Lezama (49th) and Layne (57th) added further items to complete the lopsided victory. With the win, Malvern pushed its points tally to 22 points from ten matches the same as leader Notre Dame which has a match in hand. Third is Paragon with 19 points, while Harvard Maritime Checkers is next with 18 followed by Shandy Carib Magnolias (12) and Ventures (ten). In the Men’s Championship Division, out-of-favour men’s national team forward Wayne Legerton helped himself to a second-half double for title-holder Petrotrin in a 4-1 whipping of Malvern.
National defender Dwain Quan Chan got the opener for Petrotrin in the tenth minute which it held until Daryl Hume-Duncan’s 29th minute item for Malvern for a 1-1 score at the interval. In the second half, the Oilmen stepped up the tempo and regain the lead via national midfielder Solomon Eccles in the 52nd minute before Legerton got a late double in the 57th and 66th minute to secure all three points for his club to open a three point lead at the top of the table. The Oilmen now have 27 points from ten matches, three more than Big-Four champion Paragon while Queen’s Park and Defence Force are next with 21 points each followed by Notre Dame with 13. Malvern, meanwhile stayed bottom of the table with four points, the same as Corona Fatima and two behind Paradise.
