Jamaica won the inaugural THA/All Sports Promotions sponsored West Indies Cricket Board Under-17 tournament which ended in Tobago yesterday. The Jamaican youngsters played unbeaten in the week-long competition and got their fourth straight win crushing the Windward Islands by seven wickets at the Canaan/Bon Accord Recreation Grounds. The Reggae cricketers restricted the Windward Islanders to 166/9 in the allotted 50 overs. Kion George was the top batsman with 66 while Keon Williams was the best bowler for the Jamaicans taking four for 33. Captain Ramaal Lewis took two for 36. In reply Jamaica reached its target totalling 170 for the loss of three wickets in 26 overs. Tristann Coleman hit 76, while Odain Mc Catty got 32. Jamaica earned six points for the win with 2.5 extra for taking wickets by fast bowling, to amass 8.5 points, and ultimately 29.5 in total to take over the overall title. T&T took the runner-up spot with 23.5 points after beating Guyana by two wicket at Shaw Park.
The Guyanese opted to bat and made 157/8 in match reduced to 46 overs because of a late start. Shimron Hetymyer was again in fine form lashing 78 runs. Taignarine Chanderpaul, son of prolific batsman Shivnarine, did not find his form on the day, falling for 19. Byran Charles led the bowling for the local boys getting 3 for 24 and Bootan had economical figures of two for two. In their turn at the crease, T&T replied with 158 for 8 in 45.1 overs. Jeremy Solozano was the top run getter with 56. Al Small was next hitting 31 runs. Arrif Chan was the best Guyanese bowler getting 3 for 26. The Jovan Ali led boys collected 7.5 points for the victory as Guyanse got a lone point, to end on 15.5 points to drop to fifth. Windward Islands held on for third, despite losing to Jamaica. The Windwards collected 0.5 points which lifted its total to 18, the same tally as Barbados but got the nodge by having more wins than the Barbadians (two wins to one). Leeward Islands finished bottom of the table on 4.5 points.
