Reigning national girls’ under-17 champion Kristi Reno-Singh impressively walked away with four titles from the Solo Open Junior Badminton Tournament finals held on Saturday at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Chaguanas. The St Augustine Girls’ High School student picked up the girls’ under-17 singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles in addition to the girls’ under-19 singles crown. Reno-Singh was the favourite to win all her titles as she did not drop a single set throughout the entire tournament. She discarded Cristars club-mate, Ashisha Persad, 21–4 in two straight sets in the girls’ under-17 singles. The teenaged sensation then stepped up to the under-19 division where she clashed against 2011 girls’ under-19 national champ Reba Fleary. Reno-Singh dominated the first set of the final 21–13. However, Fleary would not relinquish the title so easily as she battled her opponent to the very end but eventually lost 22–20.  The quadruple champ then joined forces with Regal Smashers player, Sheraz Nabbie, to clinch the under-17 mixed doubles title over Shuttle Force duo Jada Renales and Adrian Nicholson (21–8, 21–12). Reno-Singh’s fourth title came when she and Persad smashed St Joseph’s Convent (San Fernando) students, Tanya and Tiffany Rampersad, 21–12, 21–16 in the girls’ under-17 doubles. Nabbie, Jada Renales and Matthaus Wilford also got their spot in the limelight by emerging triple crown winners.

Nabbie beat Naim Mohammed (21–18, 21–13) in the boys’ under-17 singles. Mohammed then got the opportunity to taste victory when he teamed up with Nabbie to defeat Shuttle Force’s Adrian Nicholson and Will Lee (21–13, 21–19) in the boys’ under-17 doubles. Wilford took the boys’ under-19 singles title from Cristars club-mate Jason Ramjass who went under 21–7, 21–12. Wilford clinched his second win with Ramjass in an interesting all-Cristars boys’ under-19 doubles final. The pair triumphed over Ramnarine Ramoutar and Raphael Kelly 21–14, 21–19. Wilford’s third crown was attained with the help of Tiffany, as they defeated Central Badminton Academy and Club’s (CBAC) Shannon Sundersingh and Kevon Butcher, 21–11, 21–14 in the under-19 mixed doubles. Renales began her winning ways by conquering Tiffany 21–16, 21–14 in the girls’ under-15 singles. She and Shuttle Force club-mate, Ralista Wong, then disposed Tiffany and Tanya in the girls’ under-15 doubles 21–9, 21–10.  The girls’ Shuttle Force standout came out on top the under-15 mixed doubles with Cristars’ Rivaj Seenath after emerging victorious in some round robin matches. Shuttle Force’s Britney Constantine and CBAC’s Leon Cassie and Stephon Butcher all emerged double crown winners. After dominating the under-11 division two years in a row, Cassie made his debut in the under-13 category to beat Michael Constantine 21–10, 21–18 in the singles. Nine-year-old Butcher grabbed the boys’ under-11 singles and the boys’ under-13 doubles with Cassie. Britney was crowned the girls’ under-13 champ and shared the mixed under-13 crown with Michael.
