Sports Minister Anil Roberts has described Keshorn Walcott's gold medal performance in the men's javelin finals at the 14th IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships in Barcelona, Spain, yesterday, as a remarkable achievement.
"Fantastic, especially coming from a rural community, like Toco. He now joins Ato Boldon, Darrel Brown and Jehue Gordon, (Renny Quow and Rhonda Watkins), who have won gold at the meet," said Minister Roberts. Walcott took the gold with a distance of 78.64 metres. Roberts added that the win will prepare Walcott for his debut at London Olympics Games, later this month. "He is going to London as a junior. We are not expecting him to win gold there but he will do well to get into the finals and improve his personal best which will augur well for the 2016 Olympics (in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) where we anticipate him getting a medal."
The D'Abadie/OMeara MP added that Walcott's family and all of Toco should be proud. Roberts was speaking after yesterday's cabinet meeting at Coco Reef Hotel in Crown Point, Tobago and revealed that the "entire cabinet celebrated victory". During the post-Cabinet press briefing, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also congratulated Walcott on his achievement.
