The University of the West Indies (UWI) went into territory unknown, clear at the top of the T&T Rugby Football Union (T&TRFU) Senior Division standings, with a 24-15 victory over Caribs on Sunday. The result put UWI on nine points, four from the previous week's opening win over reigning second tier champions Tobago RFC, while it gained a solid five points for scoring four tries against Caribs. Jesse Richards scored a pair of first half tries, before Jamal Frank did the same in the second. Arthur Thompson converted one of Richards and Frank's efforts. The consequence was contrary for Caribs, which lost its second match, after Stag Trinidad Northern trounced the same team 31-19 in the opener, a week prior. Northern missed its chance to keep tabs on UWI, as it suffered a 28-0 default loss to Defence Force. Northern failed to field a team for the match, citing fatigue and a lack of players to successfully challenge both divisions.
In the other fixture, Harvard's Senior Division team improved from an 8-5 deficit at the half to defeat Rainbow 37-17, at Harvard Pitch, Queen's Park Savannah. Hayden Bowne scored Harvard's only first half try, while Aasan Lewis scored a penalty, with Anton Celestine keeping Rainbow in the challenge with a try of his own. Isaac Cannon and visiting Briton Jake Hiscock scored one try each in the second half, while Brown scored a second and Lewis securing another two for a hat-trick. Lewis converted two more efforts. Edison Nathaniel and Keron Williams got on the scoresheet for Rainbow with second half tries, with Themba Jack converting one in a losing effort. On Sunday, Defence Force will attempt to improve its title prospects when it takes on Harvard at 4.30 pm, while Caribs and Rainbow battle at the same time. Northern's clash with Tobago will be rescheduled due to the demand for ferry tickets for the "Great Race", while UWI is on a bye.
