Onetokeep for Breeders Classic

The top four West Indian bred three-year-olds will clash today, Emancipation Day in the feature Betting Levy Board (BLB) sponsored T&T Classic over 1,800 metres on the main track at Santa Rosa Park, Arima. The 11-horse field is headed by Guineas winner Unquestionable, along with Midsummer Classic winner Onetokeep. Also in the fray is Oaks winner The Big Squeeze and the consistent Big Thing, which finished second in both legs of the first and second jewels of the local racing’s Triple Crown. The inaugural running of the $500,000 Grade One purse event will ensure that the winner receive $300,000. Whichever thoroughbred wins will gain Derby favouritism. Champion trainer, John O’Brien, holds the aces and his chestnut gelding Onetokeep will be the horse to beat. He seems to have gone forward since his last race and with tongue-tie and lasix added, he will be difficult to beat under Brian Harding. The Rohit Dube trained Big Thing has been a model of consistency and he showed his well being by winning his last start against older horses. He did not work as exuberantly as was expected last week but his chance is there for all to see. Unquestionable which won the Guineas, is quietly recapturing his best form and with Ronald Ali back in the saddle, could surprise them all. Oaks heroine, The Big Squeeze, has been well prepared by Michael Carew Jr and if she is good enough, could uspet the boys. The juveniles will also make their eagerly awaited debut today and trainer Glenn Mendez looks set to land the first event for West Indian bred two-year-old maidens with either of The Big Show and Safra Tilah. The former is going well but may find it difficult to peg back stablemate Safra Tilah which has the rail to help. Ricky Jadoo is good with first-timers and this should be another winner for the likeable veteran. The Mendez duo should prove too strong for this field. Post time for the ten-race card is noon.
