Notre Dame were crowned champions of the T&T Hockey Board Women’s Championship Division at the National Hockey Centre, Tacarigua, on Saturday night without breaking a sweat after scheduled opponents and last year’s winner Malvern failed to show for their scheduled encounter. With the three points earned, the Dames pushed their tally to 31 points with two matches left to play, eight clear of Malvern which has one match left while Paragon is next with 22 points and three matches remaining, one ahead of Shandy Carib Magnolias.

However, the Dames can still have the title taken away as they are involved in two matters which are before the League’s Disciplinary Committee, with Harvard Maritime Checkers and Magnolias. Magnolias, kept its ambitions of lifting the title alive depending on the outcome of the Disciplinary Commitee decisions with a 5-0 thrashing of Ventures led by two goals each from teenager Brianna Govia and veteran Stacey Siu Butt while Kristi-Ann Chin added one. After a 0-0 first-half, Govia got her goals in the 53rd and 69th minutes while Siu Butt netted in the 54th and 57th, and Chin in the 66th minute. Tomorrow, Paragon and Magnolias will face off from 8 pm.

Davis’ hat-trick  keeps Army in chase

The race for the Men’s Championship title is far from over after Kirth Davis netted a second-half hat-trick to inspire Defence Force to a 4-1 whipping of Corona Fatima on Saturday. Gerrard Ferguson opened the scoring for the “Teteron Men” in the 12th minute but Andrew Vieira got Fatima level four minutes later to leave both teams level at 1-1 at the interval. Three minutes into the second-half, Davis got his first followed by further strikes in the 58th and 62nd minutes to seal an important three points for his tea.

The victory improved to 27 points from 12 matches, three adrift of defending champion Petrotrin and Paragon who have played 12 and 13 matches, respectively. Fourth placed Queen’s Park, without a chance of being cronwed champions, has 24 points from 13 maches. The Oilmen also have a superior goal-difference of plus-40 to Paragon’s plus-34. (NS)
