Caribs return to rugby summit

Champions Caribs progressed to more familiar territory at the top of the T&T Rugby Football Union (T&TRFU) Toyota Championship Division table, with a 17-10 win over Harvard, at the latter’s home venue in the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, on Saturday. It was a result which saw Caribs record a third successive victory, while dropping Harvard to its first loss of the campaign, putting the 2011 league winners back on top of the six-team standings. The match was at a stalemate from the half-time, with Jamal Clarke opening for Caribs, before Harvard’s Joseph Quashie put both teams level at 5-5, as both efforts went unconverted. Caribs then took its second lead of the match through a Miguel Lara try 10 minutes after the restart, but again Harvard  equalised with a Jerome O’Brien try in the 62nd minute.

However, AC Wright’s try, which was converted by Don Rojas, saw the “Beer Boys” exact revenge against the team which defeated it 12-7 in the Ruggerama competition last month. The other Championship match saw Stag Trinidad Northern add to Police RFC’s woes by inflicting a 59-5 beating, to win its second match on the trot. The result would mean that Northern advanced to third position with a bonus point awarded, which Caribs leapfrogged Harvard. Harvard, however, received a bonus point for losing by seven points.
