Monifa Sealy shot 76 on opening day.

T&T’s women had a strong start to their title defence of the George Teale Trophy when they topped the table on the opening day of the RBC 56th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships at the St Kitts Royal Golf Club, yesterday. The duo of Monifa Sealy (76) and Kelsey Lou Hing (76) combined to give the team a score of 10 over par 152, while Brittany Marquez, the team’s third member, shot 78. They lead Puerto Rico (154), Cayman Islands (155) and Jamaica (163) at the top of the leaderboard.

Meanwhile, the men’s team struggled to come to terms with the windy conditions during the Hoerman Cup, slipping to seventh out of eight teams. Deryck Gonsalves (78), Talin Rajendranath (79) and Alderray Downes (77) all had poor finishes, dropping four to six shots on the last five holes.  Dominican Republic (284) had two players shooting the under par scores for the day and are in the lead over the OECS (292) by eight strokes. The only other player to shoot was Adrian Norford of the OECS.
Competing in the Ramon Baez Trophy (Mid Amateur) against the team from the OECS, Dave Rajkumar and Clint Alfred complimented each other and finished the round with a two under 69, leaving them in third place behind Jamaica (65) and the Cayman Islands (68).

The pair felt that they left a few shots out there and can definitely improve today. The team of Michael Commissiong and Carlos Baynes finished with 76 to secure fifth spot in the Francis & Steele Perkins Cup (Seniors). They are definitely looking to improve over the next day as they are only four shots behind the leaders Barbados. In the Higgs & Higgs Trophy (Super Seniors), Fabien Lee Foon and Arjon Samlal were tied for third spot with Barbados after ending the day with a three over par 74. They trail leaders Puerto Rico (71) and  Jamaica (72).
