T&T walked away with the George Teale Memorial (women) and Higgs & Higgs (Super Seniors) Trophies as the 56th Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships came to a close at the Royal St Kitts Golf Club yesterday. The team of Kelsey Lou Hing (76), Monifa Sealy (78) and Brittany Marquez (78) logged a fourth day score of 154 to complete the tournament on 598 (152 + 142 + 150 + 154), which was enough to fend off the challenge of runners up Puerto Rico (605), whom they led by six strokes going into the final day. Puerto Rican Maria Torres held on to her Individual lead with a final tally of 291 with Lou Hing and Sealy (299) tied for second and Marquez (318) finishing fourth. Meanwhile, Super Seniors Fabien Lee Foon and Arjon Samlal also maintained their overnight lead as their score of 75 kept them three strokes ahead of Puerto Rico’s Carlos Matos and Elvin Gonzales (289), whose last day 73 was not enough.
T&T’s men were unable to improve their standings in the Hoerman Cup, finishing sixth with a final total of 1263. Captain Deryck Gonsalves (77), Talin Rajendranath (79), Jessel Mohammed (80) and Jake Delaney (82) posted 318 yesterday to add to their 320, 317 and 308 over the past three days. At the top of the board, OECS (1186) came from behind to snatch victory from the Dominican Republic (1191) despite trailing by seven strokes after three days. Paul Michael from the OECS won the individual title with a 290 score. The two-time defending champions Carlos Baynes and Michael Commissiong continued their disappointing run in the Francis & Steele Perkins Trophy, shooting 78 to finish tied for fifth on 303, seven shots behind winners Bahamas. Mid Amateurs Dave Rajkumar and Clint Alfred began playing reasonably well but hopes were lost when Rajkumar injured his wrist on the 11th hole. They dropped one spot to seventh overall, with perennial favourites Dominican Republic winning convincingly.
