The Trinidad & Tobago Canoe/Kayak Federation (TTCKF), in conjunction with two of its member clubs, the Trinidad Surf Ski Club and the Trinidad Kayak Club hosted a 6.4km race from Williams Bay, around Caledonia Island and back on Sunday. This race was a warmup for the "The Maritime Ortoire River Race" which will be held on Saturday August 25, in Ortoire Village, Mayaro. David Hackshaw won the race in a time of 36.17 minutes. As defending champion of the 21km Ortoire River Race for the past two years he will be going all out to complete a hattrick. Hackshaw will face stiff competition when he faces other top athletes such as Ryan Mendes, Johan Sydow, Michele Boccara, Nigel Wall and John Horsfall. Michel Boccara placed second in a time of 40.52 minutes and in third place was 17-year-old Sherlon Pierre in 41.20 minutes. Pierre was the winner of the 7 km race in last year's Ortoire event and he will be defending his title against many experienced paddlers like Merryl See Tai, Dexter Mahadeo and Glenn Wilkes to name a few. Wilkes is a veteran in kayaking and he has paddled around the island of Trinidad on two occasions. Several young paddlers from 6th Trinidad Sea Scouts of St. Mary's College will be vying for glory as well as some dragon boat paddlers and 'Hardcore' participants who are challenging themselves in this kayak event for the first time. In addition to the two races, there will be fun kayaking for all from 10am to 3pm. One of the goals of the TTCKF is to encourage the participation of the primary and secondary school children in the sport of kayaking with a view to identifying talent for competitive paddling.
