T&T's Breanna Stampfli booked a place into the quarterfinals of the Girls Under-18 draw of the Second International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior circuit at the Shaw Park Tennis Courts in Tobago yesterday. The fourth seed Fed Cup player whipped St Lucian Julia D'Auvergne 6-2, 6-0 in their second round match-up and will face fifth ranked Erin Faulkner (USA) later today for a semifinal spot. Stampfli, who is ranked 504 in the world, got bye in the first round and was the lone local player to get past the second round. Compatriot and third seed Kandis Legall suffered a surprise lose going down to the unranked American Maddie Pothoff who dominated the encounter 6-0, 6-0. Legal was not the only top player to fall as the number one ranked Russian Ljubov Vazhenina was dismissed by Jenna Friedel of the USA 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3. Locals Carissa Rodulfo, Shania Millington, Aryanne Hart-Dixon, Juliet Campbell, Dominique Coutain, Vikisha Kelly, Makalah Goodridge and Danielle Devenish all bowed out in the first round. Second ranked Peeray Charoensirisutthikul of Thailand will be favoured to win and qualified whipping Nancy Menjivar (El Salvador) 6-0, 6-0 and will next play Danielle Thompson of Bahamas who eliminated Bajan Kiana Marshall 6-2, 6-2.
Friedel will play Sanjana Sudhir of India. Sudhir eased past Cherise Slocombe of Barbados in their Round 2 contest 6-1, 6-0. Pothoff will next square off against seventh seed Elizabeth Sutherland (USA). The American got by D'Jeri Raymond of Antigua and Barbuda 6-0, 6-1. In Boys U-18 action, local players again had a tough day as home-boy Ty Abraham was the only T&T to survive the first round on Monday. Playing on his home court Abraham was leading sixth seed Barbadian Matthew Hutchinson taking the first set 6-0 before the visitor retired. Abraham lost to Turkey's Sinan Orhon late yesterday in their second round encounter 6-4, 6-1. Abraham's twin brother, Josh, the eighth seed, and seventh seed Julian Greig were also eliminated. Josh lost to Canadian William Tutecky in a close first round encounter (6-4, 7-5) while Greig fell to Victor of Gurevich of the USA (6-3, 6-3), also in the first round. Scott Lanser, Jabari Davidson, Ibrahim Mohammed, Ross Hackshaw, Gianluc Robinson, Kyrel Trim, Che Sanchez and Elan Mendes were beaten in their matches. Mendes put up a fight in his battle with second seed Yannik James of Grenada but went out 6-4, 6-4. Trim was brushed aside by Italian fourth seed Iacopo Beltramo (6-1, 6-1) and third seed Stephan Frljanic of Canada whipped Mohammed (6-1, 6-0). Top seed Mohd Merzuki of Malaysia got his campaign off with a win over Russian Semen Tripolskiy (7-5, 6-2).
Emma-Rose Trestrail is one of three local players into the girls U-14 semifinals. Top seed Trestrail got a bye in the first round will play compatriot Lily Stauble who whipped another T&T player Anya King (6-0, 6-0). Joni-Mae Ammon will square off against Barbadian second seed Jaimie Lewis in the second semi. Ammon advanced to the final four beating another local Emma Davis (6-2, 6-1). Jelani Davidson is one of two T&T players into the boys U-14 semis. The number four seed got by Juanaldo Greig 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in an all local match up and will battle top seed Taqel Lewis of St. Lucia (6-1, 6-1) in today's first semis. The second match is also a T&T/St. Lucia face-off. Local lad Nabeel Mohammed upset second seed Tjimon Louisy in a entertaining battle 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6 (5). There was action in the boys and girls U-18 and boys U-14 doubles first round yesterday, with the quarterfinals set for today. Ammon and Trestrail were carded to face Davis and Stauble in the girls U-14 double finals. Daynelle Des Vignes captured the first title of the one-week tournament which began on Saturday. The Tobago player outplayed another T&T player Ishala Gosine 4-0, 4-0. Action continues from 9 o'clock this morning.
