COLOMBO— West Indies off spinner Sunil Narine is among four cricketers shortlisted for the International Cricket Council emerging player of the year award, the ICC announced yesterday. The 24-year-old Trinidadian who made his test debut in June this year has been named with three other shortlisted nominees—New Zealand’s Doug Bracewell, Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal, and Australia’s James Pattinson.

In July, Narine claimed a career best haul of 5-27 to bowl the West Indies to a 20-run victory over New Zealand in the fifth and final one-day international at Warner Park. To qualify for the emerging player of the year award a player must be under the age of 26 at the start of the observation period and have played fewer than five Tests, ten ODIs or five T20Is at the start of the voting period.

Meanwhile, two West Indian cricketers have also been short listed for the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award. They are, ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2011, Stafanie Taylor and Anisa Mohammed who will be vying for the position with the England pair of Sarah Taylor and Lydia Greenway. Also, West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle is in the running for the ICC twenty20 International performance of the year. Gayle is among four players shortlisted on the basis of his innings of 85 not out against New Zealand in June in which he struck seven fours and five sixes from 52 balls.
