German Timo Scholz of CCN took first place in stage nine of the Tour of T&T Unity race. Scholz finished the Ahamad Charles 96 kilometre road race in two hours and 53.45 seconds. In second place was Ben Simmons of Primal Europe finishing with the same time as Scholz in 2:53.45 followed by T&T's Emile Abraham (Rosetti Devo) in third. Abraham is now set to retain the "yellow jersey" which he lost to Edwin Avilla at the Nathan Hajal Stage 5 after finishing 10th in the stage. He now lies fifth overall and 14 seconds behind the overall leader Columbia's Edwin Vanegas. On Friday the Compton Gonsalves stage was cancelled due to severe flooding and heavy rainfall in various parts of south Trinidad.
Yesterday's race began at Frisco Junction in Point Fortin and ended at the BP Resource Mayaro. The cyclists experienced a number of inclines while passing through Tableland, Poole Village entering Mayaro, causing a few of the cyclists to be cut from the pack as they were unable to keep up. The majority of the race was led by the top five which consisted of Scholz, Simmons, Abraham, Under-23 cyclist Jamol Eastman and Jamaican Marloe Rodman of Rafmon Mecalfab. Eastman and Rodman ended in fourth and fifth, respectively. Tomorrow's final stage will pedal off at the Mayaro Indoor facility. Cyclists will in a northerly direction to Manzanilla and North West to Valencia then west into Port of Spain to finish at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Following today's final stage, an award ceremony will be held at Eric Williams Financial Building in Port-of-Spain.
