...The Big Squeeze cruises in Oaks

On the day when the nation celebrated it's 50th anniversary of Independence, former champion trainer Glenn Mendez showed why he is the most successful conditioner at Santa Rosa Park. Mendez saddled Just Call Me Roger to win yesterday's feature Bernard Dulal-Whiteway Independence Cup over 1,800 metres on the turf track at the centralised facility in Arima. In front a large holiday crowd on Neal & Massy Day At The Races, Just Call Me Roger with Nobel Abrego aboard was sent off as the 5/1 third favourite behind Raging Halo. From the off, Montejo was sent straight into the lead from Joezel with Just Call Me Roger tracking in third. These were followed by Galveston, Mob The Warrior and Boogie Blues. Going down the back-straight, Joezel shaded Montejo for the lead as Just Call Me Roger took aim at the leaders as Galveston moved closer to the leaders.
At the far turn, Abrego pressed the accelerator button and the son of One Nice Cat/Sport Cafe shot into a three-length advantage, never to be seen again. Montejo and Sheldon Abrego tried to bridge the gap from the home turn but could not land a serious blow, while Mob The Warrior stayed on well to be third. Galveston, the lone T&T-bred horse, finished a credible fourth for champion owner Shivam Maharaj. Just Call Me Roger recorded the time of 1:54.2 for the trip. An elated Mendez said, "This is the first time that I am winning this event and it is the first time that Abrego has won a race for me. I am very happy." In the other feature, the Neal & Massy Oaks being contested over 1,800 metres on the main track, prohibitive favourite The Big Squeeze, enhanced her classic reputation by winning the Oaks. The Big Squeeze wrote her name into the annals of racing history by becoming the first filly to win both the Gleneagle and Oak Stakes. Shaun Ellis had the "D Boyz Syndicate owned filly tracking the pace set by long time leader Lady Angelica. However, at the far turn, he took control and from that point, the only question was how far.
At the end, The Big Squeeze was 3 1/2 lengths ahead of a battling Luna Divina which outbattled Lady Angelica for second position. The Big Squeeze recorded the time of 1:56.4 for the trip. The Derick Mosca trained Free Passage sent a Derby warning Onetokeep with an impressive victory against older rivals in the seventh event on the day's card. The gelding by Image Maker/Select Princess quickened well for jockey Lionel Ramos in the 1,750 metres event. He recorded the time of 1:53.16. Sixteen-year-old Kerron Khelawan recorded his first career winner when piloting 65/1 outsider Nakita to win the eight race on the ten-race programme. Khelawan had 3 1/4 length to spare favourite Lawbreaker which was ridden by racing legend Emile Ramsammy. Riding honours for the day were shared between Abrego and Ramos, who both rode two winners. Training honours were also shared with Mendez and Mosca saddling two winners each.
