Multi-talented visually impaired T&T athlete Ronald Carlos Greene finished a disappointing 11th in the final of the F11 (visually impaired) discus event at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, England, yesterday. The 43-year-old, who is widely recognised for his powerlifting prowess, missed in his initial two attempts, which saw him slide down the table, before finally getting off the mark in 26.28m, which put him in eighth position, which, if it stood at the end of the third round, would have given him a further three attempts to improve his mark. However, following his third attempt, Dominican Republic thrower Alfonso Olivero Encarnacion threw a 27.08m effort, which saw Greene knocked out of the top eight, and unable to take another bid.
Greene's throw was just over two and a half metres off his season and personal best mark of 28.84m.Spaniard David Casino, who was initially favoured, threw a season-best 38.41m, which saw him take gold in the F11 discus event. Ukraine's Vasyl Lishchynskyi won silver (38.41 m) and Austrian Bil Marinkovic took bronze (34.59 m). Greene will be back in action today in the shot put final, which is set to commence at 5am T&T time. He will compete against 20 other athletes. Greene will have to improve on his season and personal best mark of 10.71m, to stand a chance of medalling. On Saturday, T&T's only other representative at the Games, 17-year-old swimmer Shanntol Ince finished last in a time of 5:39.48 in the women's 400m freestyle (S9), which was not enough to see her through to the final. Two days before, she also did not qualify for the final of the 100m butterfly, finishing in 1:25.6 seconds, and on Friday, she also failed to make the final in the 100m backstroke, with a 1:22.14 swim.
