The Jeffrey Ross Racing Special

Shropshire will be ridden for the first time by Johnny Murtagh in the 'aged' handicap over an extended six furlongs of 'good to soft' Doncaster today. Despite a welter burden, this Charles Hills-trained 'meal ticket' rates a professional special' each-way bet with four places on offer, if  they all run! Make sure they do, otherwise have a straight win bet on this talented grey which, last year, was third to Frankel. 'The racing family Hills' has always had a high opinion of Shropshire, a strong finisher with a preference for an easy surface and an even galloping surface.

Last month Shropshire was given a superb ride by stable apprentice, Matthew Lawson, to win a similar race at Ascot. Hopefully, the lad will be required to offset a 6lbs penalty next week, in the Ayr Gold Cup! Shropshire was beaten less than two lengths in the 'Stewards' Cup' at Goodwood, has thrived since and so, it's pointless trolling through the others, according to my time-handicap, which also pinpoints an obvious chance for unbeaten, Mick Channon-trained, Ollie Olga in the £70,000 group two May Hill Stakes, over a straight mile.

Ten winners go to post. Certify is also unbeaten and Richard Hannon fields strongly-fancied, Light Up My Life but Ollie Olga is a genuine 1000 Guineas prospect, clear 'best-in' and so, with Channon's juveniles carrying all before them, expect this progressive Stormy Atlantic filly to supplement recent Goodwood 'Prestige' gains and land another gamble. A quality seven-race programme opens with the £70,000 Flying Childers Stakes over five furlongs. There’d be no surprise, if Sir Prancelot causes one, under Murtagh, riding for Hannon!

Sir Prancelot will be ridden by the ex-Irish champion because Hannon's son-in-law, and our champion-elect, Richard Hughes is banned! Better than being injured, as Richard heads into the final stages of this season with a lead  of more than twenty. Betting has been suspended, 'home and dry' reckon the bookmakers, who originally had Ryan Moore odds-on favourite for the jockeys' championship. He's injured!
