After being made to wait an extra match-day to get off the mark, reigning South Zone champions Debe Secondary did so in style with a 4-1 come-from-beind win over Fyzabad Secondary, as both teams opened their campaigns in the BGTT First Citizens Secondary Schools’ Football League (SSFL) Girls’ Championship on Sunday. Shanelle Arjoon and Kayla Taylor, both of whom represented T&T at the youth level, each scored a double. Fyzabad opened with a converted penalty from Denecia Prince in the 26th minute, but her effort was soon cancelled out by Arjoon in the 30th as both teams finished the half locked at 1-1.

It was a different story in the second half as Taylor went on to score twice within the space of five minutes just after the hour mark, followed by an insurance goal in the 78th from Arjoon. The result put Debe, which prepared for the season with a tour in the US, at the head of the six-team standings after one match, as both other fixtures failed to kick off. Two fixtures were played in the north, meanwhile, as league champions and InterCol finalist St Francois Girls College also got off to a flyer with a 5-1 drubbing of Tranquility with a double from Asha Jones, and goals from Della Joseph, Samantha Kingston and Chelsea-Marie Spence.

Providence won its second straight match 1-0 to remain on top, while Malick failed to turn up for its second consecutive match. They were scheduled to take on St Joseph Convent. In the East, Arima North whipped Bishops East 7-0 with Akiela Williams on target with four goals. Last year’s Big-Four finalist and zonal winner El Dorado East will also have to wait until midweek to get off the mark after its clash with St George’s was canceled due to poor marking on the pitch. Scarborough and Mason Hall recorded wins over Bishops High (3-1) and Speyside Secondary (3-0), respectively.
