Gayle and Samuels named on ICC T20 team

COLOMBO - Two West Indies cricketers, Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels, have been named in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) team of the World Twenty20 tournament which ended in Sri Lanka on Sunday. A five-member ICC panel selected Gayle and Samuels along with three Sri Lankan players and two Australians in the eleven-man team. The two played leading roles in helping West Indies reach Sunday’s final and secure a 36-run victory over Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
 
Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was named skipper of the ICC team which also includes his teammates Lasith Malinga and Ajantha Mendis. Gayle and all-rounder Shane Watson, the player of the tournament, were named openers, while India’s Virat Kohli, Jayawardene, England’s Luke Wright and Samuels filled the middle-order slots.
 
Also included are young Australian seamer, Mitchell Starc, former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum as the wicketkeeper, and experienced Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajma. South Africa were the only major cricketing nation without a representative in the team.
