Top international, regional and local cyclists including T&T's Olympic sprint semifinalist Njisane Phillip will take to the line-up in the Lion's Sprint event, at the inaugural Beacon Cycling on the Avenue event, which pedals off on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, at 7.30 pm tonight. Marloe Rodman, the Jamaican cyclist who took the Beacon T&T Cycling Festival 14-lap main event last year will return, alongside a host of riders from the United Kingdom and the United States. Age and skill-level divisions for the race include: Open, Ladies' Run, Men's Run, 60-plus, 50-plus, Sprint, 40-plus, Junior, Ladies Cycling, and Juveniles. Close to $40,000 in cash prizes will be up for grabs.
The 1.2 km lap distance, which starts between Mike's Bikes and More Vino, will see riders turn onto De Verteuil St, and trail the outskirt of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, onto the Maraval Parkway, before returning to the starting line. The main attraction, the Open race, will conclude the day's proceedings with a 36-lap event. The winner of the Open race will take home $5,000. Sponsors for the event includes Beacon, Yoplait, National Lotteries Control Board, Gatorade, Kiss, Dimes, Flow, Mike's Bikes, Hyundai and Blue Waters.
