More than 120 students competed in the south zone of the bpTT Secondary Schools Scrabble championships held at Naparima Girls High School, San Fernando on Saturday.
St Joseph's Convent and ASJA Girls' College took top places in the senior and junior categories of the competition, respectively. Not to be outdone, however, the boys were well represented as Presentation College captured ten of the 20 south zone spots at stake for the grand finals.
The championships have been jointly organised by the Scrabble Association (TTSA) and the Rotary Club of Arima. Energy company bpTT has sponsored the competition since 2010.
The championships are divided into five zones-East, South, Central, North and Tobago-with ten seniors and ten juniors from each zone advancing to the grand finals carded for City Hall, Port-of-Spain, on November 3. Top schools in both divisions will receive trophies and cash prizes of $10,000 with the top students winning iPads, PlayStations, netbooks and Kindles.
