Stacey Siu Butt scored yet another hat-trick as Shandy Carib Magnolias kept defending champion Notre Dame winless after two matches, with a 6-2 thumping in their T&T Hockey Board's national indoor women's championship encounter at Woodbrook Youth Facility, Hamilton Holder Street, Woodbrook, on Thursday night. Siu Butt got two goals in the first half, one from the penalty spot and Brianna Govia, the other, as Magnolias overcame Carol Wynn-Whiteman's early strike for the Dames.
In the second half, Wynn-Whiteman pulled her team to within a goal of Magnolias, but Siu Butt, and Elise Olton with two, added to Magnolias' lead to complete the 6-2 victory. The win carried Magnolias to four points from two matches after a 5-5 draw with Paragon in its opener. Former national standout Carol Wynn-Whiteman got a goal in either half for the Dames, who are without a point after losing 5-2 to Ventures in a repeat of last year's title-match on Tuesday night.
At the top of the table with maximum six points is Ventures after a convincing 3-1 triumph over Maritime Harvard Checkers, led by a goal each from Lindsay Williams, Yesenia Luces and teenager Anya Sealey. Kwylan Jaggassar got the lone reply for Checkers, which stayed on three points.
Paragon is also second on the seven-team table on four points, the same as Magnolias, but with a better goal difference after two matches following a default win over Defence Force. In the lone Mixed Veterans Division match, reigning champions Queen's Park made it three wins from as many matches to all but secure a semifinal spot, whipping Corona Fatima 8-4 with the trio of Gary Griffith, Paul Weekes and Raphael Govia scoring two goals each. Today is an off day while the Under-21 boys and girls division will flick off tomorrow from 9 am.
