Narine’s magic fails to save Kolkatta

T&T and West Indies mystery spinner Sunil Narine continued his magic yesterday but it was not enough to save his team Kolkatta Knight Riders from a massive defeat at the hands of Delhi Daredevils in their opening match of the Karbonn Smart Champions League T20 series at Centurion in South Africa.

Narine grabbed 3/21 from four very good overs to help restrict Daredevils to 160 for eight from their 20 overs. He grabbed an early wicket, that of Sri Lankan and Daredevils captain Mahela Jayawardene for 21, and this brought his team right back into the match.

When fast bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji was flayed for 30 runs in one over, Narine was brought back and immediately grabbed two wickets in an over that cost one run. However, the effort all went to waste, as the KKR batsmen found the going too tough against the Daredevils fast bowlers. Left arm seamer Irfan Pathan grabbed two wickets in his first over and local boy Morne Morkel who opted for Daredevils instead of the Titans, grabbed Brendon McCullum with his first ball.

At that point the score was three for three and was effectively four for three soon after as Jacques Kallis had to retire hurt after Morkel struck him on the fingers. The Daredevil bowlers hit the deck hard and bowled back of a length which was difficult for the Asian batsmen who are accustomed to slow low tracks. The reigning IPL Champions looked very ordinary and although Manoj Tiwary struck 33, they ended well short at 108 for seven in 20 overs.
