Juventus of St John copped the second annual SW Touring Team Tobago Masters Over 40 football tournament after beating Upstars 3–1 in the finals, at the Plymouth Recreational Grounds on Sunday.
Juventus had to come from behind, with star striker Kendal Velox leading the way. The star-studded Upstars, with former T&T internationals Leonson Lewis and Dexter Skeene, opened the scoring through Skeene in the first half.
Velox levelled the score with his eighth goal of the tournament, before Emile Morris put Juventus ahead and John Garcia completed the scoring.
The winners won US$1,200 while Upstars walked away with USS1,000. Georgetown Masters finished third.
In the semifinals, Juventus whipped Curepe All-Stars 5–0 with Velox netting a hat-trick and Emmanuel Williams scoring a double. Upstars edged Georgetown 1–0 in the other semifinals.
At the quarterfinal stage Upstars nipped X Men 1–0, Curepe All-Stars got the better of Pheonix 4–3 on penalties after the scores remained score less after the full-time. Juventus blew past Real Old Men of Grenada 3–0, with Velox scoring all three. Georgetown beat WASA 2–0 as Sherwin Daniel got both goals.
Ten teams participated in the tournament. The teams were placed in two groups with the group matches taking place at the Canaan/Bon Accord Recreational Grounds on Friday and continued at Plymouth on Saturday morning.
Tournament Director Jeffrey Edwards said he was impressed with the high level of play.
Edwards said:"We had great football by the stars of yesterday who can put to same the stars of today because their skill is timeless."
Edwards said tournament may expand next year.
