T&T kickboxer Medford Charles has been given the chance to challenge for an intercontinental title by the World Association of Kickboxing (WAKO). After taking the vacant national professional super welterweight title (147-152 pounds) from Rodney Ramlal, following an eight-round bout at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Chaguanas, in August, Charles was given the opportunity to fight against an unknown opponent for the title, which is a qualifier for the World stage.
Fortunately for Charles, he has the opportunity to make a challenge in the disciplines of the low-kick, full-contact and K1 styles, all of which he practices. If Charles is successful in his challenge, he will then be able to fight for the world title, and advance to another division or even become a multiple title-holder in the various rulings.
Charles, a resident of Chaguanas, is a barber by trade and operates a kickboxing gym-Fierce Young Lions-in St Mary's, Carapichaima. He is a WAKO-certified coach. Charles' opportunity was made possible by the negotiations of Brendon Burke who is the representative for both the WAKO amateur division and the WAKO Pro division in T&T, and is also a board member of the Professional Kickboxing Council of T&T, which is the recognised body for all professional kickboxing bouts.
The local governing body for the sport is urging all athletes who desire to become kickboxers to become affiliated with the National Kickboxing Council of T&T (NKCT&T). The council is also inviting all desirous of becoming a kickboxing coach or official to join the NKCTT for WAKO certification.
