Harvard won the Police Sports Club Sevens rugby tournament, following a one-sided 22-5 victory over Rainbow Sports and Culture Club, at the St James Barracks, on Saturday. Harvard took the men's trophy, while Royalians was the top women's team. Tobago RFC won the Plate competition.
Harvard's win comes just a week before its penultimate match in the Championship Division against Rainbow, in which it will be hoping to pick up full points in search of its first major senior title. The Tragarete Road-based team currently leads the Championship with 35 points, just one ahead of reigning champions Caribs. Both teams have two matches remaining.
Despite Rainbow's loss in the final after years of dominance, president of Rainbow SCC Rudolph Jack was encouraged and happy with the performance of his players. "We are in a transition stage this season. Our emphasis is on development and we are giving the younger players the opportunity to step up and play. So to make the final is an achievement. We will do well in all the sevens tournaments this season."
No tournament was staged last year due to the host's involvement in the Limited State of Emergency. In the women's division, Royalians, Romans and Police competed, while the men's competition saw, Rainbow 1 and 2, Royalians, Harvard, Tobago, Caribs, Exilesz, Lycans and Police in action.
There were several other novelty events including a winger's race, which was won by Harvard's David Gokool, a longest punt event, won by Shakeel Cummings of Royalians, and the longest conversion sealed by the ever reliable Ryan Hinckson of Harvard. Nicolette Panton scored the most tries in the women's competition, while Gokool scored the most in the men's event.
