Dwain Quan Chan and goalkeeper Ron Alexander combined to secure an unlikely 4-3 sudden-death penalty-flicks win for Petrotrin after a pulsating 5-5 draw with Paragon in their T&T Hockey Board Indoor Championship Men's Open Division semifinal at the Woodbrook Youth Facility, on Thursday.
Paragon looked set to secure a spot in tomorrow's final after it took a 5-3 lead with eight minutes left in regulation time before Quan Chan netted twice in the final minute to earn his team a 5-5 draw and send the match to sudden-death extra-time where both teams failed to score during the ten-minute period to force penalties.
The Oilmen started off badly, with Quan Chan and fellow national player Atiba Whittington having their penalties denied by Paragon goalkeeper Jesse Thomas. However, his opposite number, Ron Alexander, also kept out Paragon's Richard Roach and Sheldon Mc Kellar's attempts for a 0-0 score after two flicks each.
In-form national forward Wayne Legerton, Brian Garcia and Solomon then converted the remaining attempts for Petrotrin, while Cogie Butler, Akim Toussaint and Kiel Murray were on target for Paragon for a 3-3 score which sent the match into sudden-death penalty flicks where Legerton again scored for the Oilmen, while Alexander kept out Murray's effort to seal the unlikely win for the national Outdoor champions.
During the 40-minute regulation time, Legerton registered a hat-trick for the Oilmen in the eighth, ninth and 29th minute, while Quan Chan got the two others, both in the 40th. For Paragon, Mc Kellar (ninth, 32nd) and Toussaint (12th, 32nd) got two each, and Butler, the other as early as the third minute.
Tomorrow (Sunday) in the final, Petrotrin, which topped the men's round-robin table as well, will meet the winner of last night's other semifinal between Defence Force and Queen's Park. The Women's Open Division semifinal proved less of a spectacle, with Stacey Siu Butt scoring twice and national junior player Elise Olton one, for Shandy Carib Magnolias to beat Maritime Harvard Checkers 3-1 to secure a place in tomorrow's final against the Paragon/Ventures winner.
Magnolias and Queen's Park also booked their places in the Under-21 Women and Mixed Veterans finals, respectively. In the Under-21 Women's semis, national youth team player Brianna Govia scored twice and Elise Olton, Gabrielle Permell and Shania De Freitas one each for Magnolias in a 5-2 defeat of Checkers while Raphael Govia scored a 33rd minute goal to earn Queen's Park a 3-2 sudden-death win over Notre Dame in the Mixed Veterans.
