South Zone giants Presentation College San Fernando, continued its quest for a full slate of trophies as it enured a tough Arima North test to secure a 1-0 win for a spot in the BGTT Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Big-Five final, at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima, yesterday.
Chivaughn Dimsoi, who was given the task to step up in the absence of Presentation College leading scorer Shackiel Henry scored the all-important goal with just 10 minutes left in the encounter. The knockout match was staged at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima, which followed a 3-0 win for Debe Secondary over St Augustine, in Girls’ Big-Four action.
Dimsoi, who has popped up with several important goals this season, netted the item which saw Pres continue its 100 percent winning streak from the start of the campaign. It was also a performance which exemplified an impressive season thus far in the defensive line for the southerners, who only conceded four goals in 12 victorious league encounters.
Unfortunately for both teams, they had to field a line-up without their best attackers. “Pres” was without lethal finisher Henry while the “Dial Dynamos’” missed midfielder Marcus Gomez, both of whom were summoned for National Under-20 duties. The result put Presentation College against Tobago champions Scarborough Secondary, for tomorrow’s semifinal. The two teams will meet at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet, Tobago, from 4 pm.
The second Big-Five semifinal will kick off today between defending champions St Anthony’s College and either Carapichaima East Secondary or Chaguanas North Secondary, at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, from 4 pm. Carapichaima which currently holds the Central Zone title, won the title in controversial fashion recently as its 2-1 loss to Chaguanas North was overturned by the SSFL disciplinary committee, after the panel deemed that Chaguanas North fielded an ineligible player.
Chaguanas has since appealed the verdict and will face a final decision today, mere hours before the 4 pm kick off. Chaguanas has contested that it fielded an ineligible player under permission from an executive member of the SSFL’s Central Zone, who gave an all-clear in the team’s final submission of players’ names and supporting documents.
The executive member has since acknowledged his fault saying, “I accept that I am at fault for not specifically stating that (ineligible player) did not qualify to play,” in a letter to the principal of Chaguanas North Secondary School. A decision is expected to be made by SSFL President Ewing Davis before midday.
