Former national defenders Dennis Lawrence and Marvin Andrews were dubbed the "Twin Towers" whenever they stepped onto the pitch for T&T.
They cemented the positions of centre-backs, appearing consistently for well over six years. Following the 2006 World Cup campaign, the two were reacquainted during the 2010 campaign.
And while for some time, T&T has found it difficult to find players to fill their shoes, the current duo of Seon Power and Carlyle Mitchell have shown potential.
Mitchell is attached to MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps while Power has caught the attention of a couple overseas clubs in Asia.
The latter, a former Joe Public man, was particularly good in T&T's recent Caribbean Cup qualifiers, scoring in the 3-0 win over Suriname at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago on the weekend.
Holding on to his starting spot in the T&T team is just one of his ambitions.
"I want to keep playing for the national team but I would like to play overseas before my career is over," Power said.
"I understand the game and my position at the back a lot better than previous years. I know it takes a lot of hard work and dedication and I'll like to urge players, especially the younger ones to realise how important it is to take the game and their training more seriously.
"I grew up watching the likes of Dennis and Marvin and I'd like to go down as one of the players who did well in defense for the country as well," said the North East Stars player, who has 35 appearances for T&T after making his debut at age 22.
Power played in the 2007 Concacaf Gold Cup, T&T's last appearance at that tournament and was also in the squad that finished runners-up at the 2007 Caribbean Cup Finals which T&T lost 2-1 to Haiti in the Final.
Almost five years later, Power wants to go a step further and also return to the Gold Cup stage.
"All of us in the team want to play in the Gold Cup. We want to take the team back to that level. But personally I will like to get to the Caribbean Cup final and win it this time. We will meet Haiti in the opening game next month and a win will be a perfect start to getting back to a level I think we should be playing at," Power added.
All for country says Cuban midfield maestro
Cuban attacking midfield maestro Marcel Hernandez, wearing the number 7 shirt was undoubtedly the most eye-catching player during the Caribbean Cup semifinal qualifying round in Tobago on the weekend.
Hernandez struck a beavertrick in his team's opening day 5-0 win over Suriname which set the momentum for his team's passage through to the Finals in Antigua next month.
The 23-year-old player will undoubtedly marvel at the chance to play at another Concacaf Gold Cup in the United States but surprisingly he seems uninterested in playing professionally outside of Cuba.
"For me it's all about my country. This is for the people back in Cuba, my teammates, the coaches...This is for the country," Hernandez said via a translator.
"Of course it will be nice to play at the highest level but at the moment that's not what I am thinking about. I try to play my game like players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo but I have my own style also.
"For me the biggest thing will be helping Cuba achieve success against the other countries in the world," said Hernandez, who was also part of the Cuban team that played at the 2011 Gold Cup and the recent semifinal round of 2014 World Cup qualifying.
Mick prefers Carlos on right wing
New Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy looks likely to leave Carlos Edwards on the right wing for the remainder of the season.
This after he pushed the former Wrexham player up from the right back position and Edwards went on to set up the winner for DJ Campbell in the recent 2-1 win over Burnley.
Edwards was used at right back by previous manager Paul Jewell and has also carried that role for T&T after being used higher up in previous years.
"He's better there. We get good things out of him (at right-back) but he is much better wide right," said McCarthy.
Teammate Daryl Murphy also seems to prefer Edwards out wide.
"Carlos has always been a winger. I played with him at Sunderland where he played right-midfield every week and was absolutely brilliant.
"If you're a left-back you don't want someone like Carlos running at you every five minutes because he's very quick and direct," said Murphy.
Edwards is one of the men Hutson Charles is targeting to be part of the T&T team for next month's Caribbean Cup Finals in Antigua and will be hoping that McCarthy is kind enough to release the player outside of the Fifa international window.
